08.22.2010 Banff, AB

The Banff Coaching Conference returns for its third year from October 8 – 11, 2010 in Banff, Alberta, Canada. This conference is a professional development opportunity for new and existing coaches who work with young competitive climbers, although many of the sessions can be adapted for a variety of abilities and ages.

This year’s theme is Long-Term Athletic Development, a concept that supports altering training principles depending on the developmental stage of the athlete and not their chronological age. With the prevalence of young children getting more involved in this sport, long gone are the days where we administer adult training programs to our smallest climbers.

The Banff Coaching Conference is very proud to be bringing in a host of sport scientists and prominent climbers to present a variety of topics, including:

•Katie Brown – professional climber and author
•Sean McColl – professional climber and Canadian Youth National Team coach
•Chris Danielson – professional route setter and representative for several climbing companies
•Vikki Weldon – competition climbing and writer
•Stacey Weldon – competition climbing and former Canadian Youth National Team Coach
•Jason Holowach – competition climber and owner of the newest gym in Saskatoon
•D?ng Nguyen – Canadian Youth National Team Coach and owner of The Vsion
•Jody Miall – professional route setter and manager of Coyotes Rock Gym
•Chris Neve – Canadian Youth National Team Coach and coordinator of The Banff Centre Climbing Gym

Presentation sessions will deal with topics in the fields of: exercise physiology, nutrition, injury prevention, female athletics, youth programming, grant & fund finding, goal setting, route setting for competitions and training, season-long training plans, sport psychology, and more.

Conference dates:
Friday, October 8 – Monday, October 11, 2010

Location:
The Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta, Canada

Registration fee:

A huge crowd of about three hundred people watched Clarrie Lam and Sean McColl (both from Vancouver, BC) win the 2010 MEC Canadian Bouldering Championships Sunday May 23, 2010 at Joe Rockhead’s Climbing Gym in Toronto.

Clarrie Lam cruised her way to victory topping all 5 finals problems. Sixteen year old Elise Sethna (Banff, AB) followed closely with 4 completions and Melissa Lacasse (Montreal, QC) rounded out the top three women with 3 problems completed.

Sean McColl, who missed last years Championship in Montreal proved once again that he is still the man to beat in Canada winning his third title in the last 4 years.  Quebec power house, Yves Gravell was a close second while veteran Terry Paholek (Edmonton, AB) finished in third place.

The TdB and Joe Rockhead’s would like to thank everyone who competed and attended this past weekends events. We also want to thank our sponsors that helped make this season and in particular this event a tremendous success - Mountain Equipment Co-op, Gripped , Friction, Beta Clothing Design, Metolius, Delire, Blurr, Evolv, IMBoulderer and Climbing Hold Review.

We would also like to thank all of our volunteers for donating their time and energy. Props to the route setter Jody Miall, Dave Voltan, Ayo Sopeju, Ghislain Losier, James Shin, Sachi Adachi and Jonathan Pencharz for setting some of the best problems we climbed on this year. Your contributions are very much appreciated by everyone who attended the comp this weekend.

Another big thank you to Bob and Sharon Bergman for hosting us this weekend! They also donated all of the proceeds from the spectator entrance fees ($2000) to the OAC (Ontario Access Coalition).

That wraps up season 7 of the MEC Tour de Bloc. I’m finally off to bed for some much needed zzzzzz’s. Thanks to everyone for making this season a blast! Looking forward to season 8.

08.08.2009 Vancouver, BC

Good Day Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Friends,

I'd like to say hello to you all as your new Interim Director of the CEC.

The existing CEC board voted me into this position with the primary task of finishing the new CEC statutes, ensuring creation of election procedures for all CEC board positions and outlining operating procedure for the governing of our sport. By this season's end we intend to have created an organizational structure that ensures proper Regional representation and a voice for all in the workings of the CEC.

In the 15 years I've been on the CEC board, I've seen the sport grow tremendously. There are exciting new trends developing. The Open division is becoming strong, thanks to the continued efforts and success of the Tour de Bloc. Our Youth division is also growing. Last year saw an explosion of eastern youth participation including the first Eastern Youth Regional in many years. I am very happy to announce that this season's Youth National Championships have already been confirmed for the Delire Centre d'Escalade in Quebec City, June 4-6, 2010.

As we move forward, I welcome all your support, comments and suggestions. Together we can see our incredible sport culture flourish.

Cheers,

Andrew Wilson

-Interim CEC Director

03.04.09 Vancouver, BC by Daniel Pi

Stay positive.

That’s the mantra Vikki Weldon tells her climbing students at the Edge Climbing Centre when she’s coaching them.

It’s part of the lesson to believe when you’re standing at the bottom of a climb that you’ll reach the top and not fall half way up.

Last Saturday Weldon was reminded of her words by one of her students during SuperKrank, a bouldering competition held at the North Van gym that featured 120 climbers, some of the best from Western Canada and Washington State.

“One of my kids asked me if I was going to send all the problems (on the first try), I said ‘I dunno,’” Weldon recalls. “He said, ‘You have to stay positive!’”  For full story click here.

The Niagara Glen has been a popular climbing and bouldering area with climbers in Eastern Canada and the US for over 30 years. A new Land Management Plan is now proposing a complete bouldering ban in the park. The plan is still in draft form and climbers have until Oct 19, 2008 to comment on the proposed changes. The Ontario Access Committee is urging all climbers to contact the appropriate park officials and express their opposition to the bouldering ban. More details including a draft letter and email contact information here >>>

After a successful 5th season, planning for the sixth installment of the Tour de Bloc is well underway. We’re in the process of securing venues and sponsors so if your gym or company is interested in working with the Tour please contact us at info@tourdebloc.com.

It’s been a busy summer here at the Tour HQ. We’ve moved offices and we’ve added several members to the TDB family. Stuart McConnell (Marketing Director), Sath Dosanjh (Sponsorship Liaison)   and Jeremy Nathan (Official Photographer - Graphic Designer) are helping take the Tour to the next level.

We’re are also introducing a youth division this season to showcase the ever growing numbers of climbers under the age of 18.

We’re are looking forward to another great season. We hope for your continued support and hope to see you at this years comps.
